I would like to share with you one of my best moments during my stay in Madeira.
Together with my friends I decided to go hiking from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo – the most famous hike on the island of Madeira in Portugal.
Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo are two of the highest peaks in Madeira with Pico Ruivo being the highest. The PR1 walk is a stunning trail that connects these two peaks. For some part of the hike you will be walking on the ledge (with railings) and other part of the hike you will either be walking on the side of the mountain or through man-made tunnels.
I had a lot of concerns deciding on this hike because I am not experienced in hiking and I wasn’t sure if it was for my strength. The route, however, is not as hard as people are saying. If I could do it, everyone can 😀
The total distance of the hike is 11km out and back (return trip) and the time it takes is 3.5-4 hours (one way).
We decided to spread our trip over two days and spend the night in a mountain hut located at the top of Pico Ruivo. Thanks to this, we could see not only a beautiful sunset but also a sunrise. Not to mention the amazing view of the starry sky at night.
I highly recommend this hike for all nature and view lovers!
