Vegetarians have a quite tough life on Madeira if they want to take a break from the kitchen and go out to eat. The basics of Madeiran cuisine are meat and fish – the national dishes are espetada made with beef, fish called espada with bananas or prego with beef and ham. There’s still bolo de caco out there but how many times you can go out and eat bread with garlic while your friends have their plates full of goodies? 😉
That’s why I made a short list of vegetarian/vegan places so you wouldn’t have to wonder ever again where to go for lunch or dinner which doesn’t include a piece of cow 😛
- MadCuba (R. da Cadeia Velha 3)
Caribbean/Cuban restaurant with freshly made meals with vegetarian options and a great variety of drinks – everything at fair prices! I would recommend looking out for happy hours – 2 cocktails for 4 E can make your day!
2. Olives (n° 116, Rua da Carreira)
A bit fancier restaurant with both vegetarian and vegan options. The dishes here are creatively served and the atmosphere is cozy due to the location on the 1st floor, which gives you a feeling of going into someone’s house. The restaurant is highly rated on TripAdvisor which makes it worth giving a try.
3. Mundo Vegan (Edifício Costa do sol III, R. Velha da Ajuda n°2)
A 100% vegan restaurant specialized in making delicious hamburgers with homemade fries. On their menu can be found many different desserts like cinnamon rolls or chocolate cake and drink options like smoothies full of vitamins. The inside is cozily decorated and makes you want to stay for a bit longer, sipping your smoothie and chilling.
4. Barreirinha Bar Café (Largo do Socorro n°1)
One of the most popular bars in Funchal with the best view of the ocean! This bar is always crowded with Erasmus students and locals so finding a spot to sit with friends is regularly a problem. But everything can be pardoned after trying the set meal made of their famous hamburgers (vegetarian options with tofu) and even (if possible) better drinks. Don’t leave this place without trying passion fruit poncha or mohito – that’s the things worth dying for…
5. Plano D (Rua das Hortas n.11)
A place with vegetarian and vegan options for a cheap breakfast or lunch. Besides the restaurant, it’s also a shop with healthy and bio food where you can restock your home supply with nuts, dried fruits, plant milk and many other products.
6. Blackpearl Snack bar (Rua Joao Tavira)
Right in the heart of Funchal which makes it a perfect place to stop for lunch while exploring the city. Blackpearl’s menu contains a variety of pregos, toasts and hamburgers with at least 3 vegetarian options. The prices are more than reasonable, particularly given their location. The waiter is really friendly and happy to banter about current affairs or any other topic.
