On the beginning of the December 1950 to Funchal arrived passanger ship “Durban Castle”. On the board was sir Winston Churchill. Britians lived on the island and locals walcomed appreciated politician very warm. Churchill stayed in famous hotel Reid’s Palace. The purpose of his visit on Madeira was the invitention of Reid’s. It was marketing promotion of reopening hotel after World War II. He was on the island 12 days. .
Sir Winston Churchill visited Câmara de Lobos on the 8th January 1950. He visited island by rolls-royce. He was very impressed of the port, boats on the coast and close located, bright houses. On the tarrace he painted the view of the bay. The photographer Raul Perestrelo captured this moment and the place is called Miradouro Winston Churchill now. This photography is very popular and you can see it in local restaurants and bars around Câmara de Lobos. As a souvenire you can buy postcards with it. This place on the east side of port has special memory board today.
