How to get to Funchal from Câmara de Lobos?

Funchal, the capital of Madeira is situated around 8 km away from Camara de Lobos where we, volunteers, live. Though those cities are not so far away from each other, there are a few variants of transport which I would like to show to you:

1.By car

The most obvious way which doesn’t mean the easiest one, since most of the volunteers don’t own a car or scooter here. If you have friends among the locals you can always ask them to give you a lift. But if you don’t, then don’t lose your hope! You can always try hitchhiking which is way more fun and will make you feel like a true adventurer!

2. By bus

Now – time to focus because it’s not as easy as you think. In Camara de Lobos we have 3 bus stops and only one is situated in the city center. What’s more, there are 2 bus companies running to Funchal and back. Let’s start with the closest bus stop located next to Repsol station, around 5 minutes from Teatro Metaphora. Right here you can catch buses from Rodeoeste company which are running approximately every hour till midnight. To get to Funchal you need to take buses number 7, 96 or 137. You can purchase a one-way ticket from the driver for 2.20 € or buy a monthly pass for 40 €.

The other company is called Giro and has 2 bus stops located 15 and 20 minutes from Teatro. The first stop of bus No. 3 can be found close to the cement factory. To reach the second you need to go by the main road to the next rondo where bus No. 1 stops. The buses are going on different routes but both will take you to the centrum of Funchal. The one-way ticket purchased from the driver costs 1.95 € but the company has also an extra offer. In point of sale, you can buy the Giro Cards which costs 0.5 € and can be loaded with money. With this card, the ticket costs 1.35 € but if you load your card with 12.25 € or more – you can cut the price to 1.25 €.

3. On your foot!

That’s the spirit! The walk from Camara de Lobos to the center of Funchal can be tiring, but amazing views on your way make it satisfying. It’s a perfect opportunity to explore city suburbs – you can find a Chinese shop with interesting spices or chill out with a company of swans in a park. Depending on where you want to get the walk can take around 1.5 to 2 hours. The way is simple – it starts with a promenade in Camara which ends 2 km further with parking and changes into the road that goes to the Centre of Funchal. Remember – if you somehow get lost, Google maps can be useful here!
