Better indoor air

In every volunteers weekly plan is a day for cleaning. We clean at home also, but in different climate surprisingly you can learn new challenges. Here in Madeira is for example very humid and warm therefore I want to talk about few steps to improve Your indoor air. Keeping humidity around 30%-50% helps keep room temperature, allergens and smells under control.

Open windows and doors

Airing the room is important for airflow. When you have possibility, then with sunny time keep the shutters closed or shade the windows not to overheat the room.

Get humidity lowering house plants

First of all keep flowers and plants out which want too much watering to avoid mold and create extra humidity. But there is plants, what might help to reduce moisture from air in your room or house. I researched few to recommend few for you. My favourites are: Peace lily, English ivy, Parlour palm, Boston fern, Tillandsia aka air plant.

Take cooler and shorter showers

That is obvious, but avoid condensation from hot and long showers.

Utilize your ceiling fans or air purifier

It really depends how much heavy air collects into your room or house , but ceiling fans are helping circulate the air. Air purifiers are important for people who have asthmatic problems or other breathing difficulties. In some countries still hand held fans are used – weaved from palm leaves.

Use natural cleaning products

First and most importantly cut out the aerosol, it is not thinkable to ruin more our stratosphere. My experience has shown me You can clean whole house with vinegar, lemon and baking soda. It will leave odourless and toxic free surfaces.

Vinegar, lemon, baking soda do not belong only in kitchen

Keep it minimal

Less textile and things prone to rot or soak in humidity You have – the better ! Keep shoes outside and do not take food to rooms because it will call flies. At evenings is also good to dim the lights otherwise mosquitoes find your room.

Make Your room and whole house smoking free zone

Every country has their rules on https://ec.europa.eu/health/sites/health/files/tobacco/docs/smoke-free_legislation_overview_en.pdf

Have pets outside

Cats and dogs should have their own house with their own bed, food and water provided. If not possible with heavy rain or cold weather , then try to keep animals out of bed. Especially when they had long walk in mud.

Aromatherapy and beeswax candles

Instead of synthetic smells use natural essential oils. For pure smell You can use Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Lavender oils. In candle world the top winner is beeswax candles. Make sure not to breathe in paraffin or petroleum from gas lamps.

Choose Zero VOC paints

…on Your walls, furniture, ceilings without toxic glues and varnishes.
