A recent observation (I just realised this now):

We define dead trees in a similar way to some dead animals. A chicken becomes poultry. A pig becomes pork. A tree becomes wood. We distance ourselves from the story behind each chicken breast we consume by changing the definition of a chicken to poultry. The same happens when we cut down a tree. The tree becomes a mass of wood. Countable nouns become uncountable. Perhaps we find it just as hard to face that we kill trees as killing animals.
